Level: intermediate
Equipment: barbell
Force: pull
Mechanic: compound
Core muscles: hamstrings

Description

Romanian deadlift from deficit focuses on controlled movement and maintaining proper body alignment throughout the exercise. The goal is to create tension where needed while avoiding unnecessary strain or momentum. This helps improve movement quality, joint stability, and overall physical control.

Instructions:

  1. Begin standing while holding a bar at arm's length in front of you. You can stand on a raised platform to increase the range of motion.
  2. Begin by flexing the knees slightly, and then flex at the hip, moving your butt back as far as possible, lowering the torso as far as flexibility allows. The back should remain in absolute extension at all times, and the bar should remain in contact with the legs. If done properly, there should be heavy tension felt in the hamstrings.
  3. Reverse the motion to return to the starting position.

Exercise FAQ

How can I make this exercise harder without adding a lot of weight?

Slow down the lowering phase, add a brief pause in the hardest position, or increase total reps while keeping form crisp.

Which muscles should feel like they’re doing most of the work?

You should feel the target muscles working while the rest of the body stays braced. If a joint or the lower back is doing the heavy lifting, reduce load and tighten your setup. Think of it as hip hinge done with repeatable, clean reps.

What’s a common mistake people make here?

Rushing reps and losing body position. Keep the movement smooth and repeatable so tension stays where you want it. Think of it as hip hinge done with repeatable, clean reps.
