Leg Pull-In
Level: beginner
Equipment: body only
Force: pull
Mechanic: compound
Core muscles: abdominals
Secondary muscle: none

Description

Leg pull-in focuses on controlled movement and maintaining proper body alignment throughout the exercise. The goal is to create tension where needed while avoiding unnecessary strain or momentum. This helps improve movement quality, joint stability, and overall physical control.

Instructions:

  1. Lie on an exercise mat with your legs extended and your hands either palms facing down next to you or under your glutes. Tip: My preference is with the hands next to me. This will be your starting position.
  2. Bend your knees and pull your upper thighs into your midsection as you breathe out. Continue the motion until your knees are around chest level. Contract your abs as you execute this movement and hold for a second at the top. Tip: As you perform the motion, the lower legs (calves) should always remain parallel to the floor.
  3. Return to the starting position as you inhale.
  4. Repeat for the recommended amount of repetitions.

Exercise FAQ

What’s the safest way to progress over time?

Add a small amount of reps first, then load. If technique slips, step back and rebuild with cleaner reps. Think of it as pulling done with repeatable, clean reps.

Does grip or stance matter?

Yes—small changes can shift what you feel and how stable you are. Pick the most controlled position and keep it consistent while you learn the movement.

Which muscles should feel like they’re doing most of the work?

You should feel the target muscles working while the rest of the body stays braced. If a joint or the lower back is doing the heavy lifting, reduce load and tighten your setup.
