Level: beginner
Equipment: machine
Force: pull
Mechanic: isolation
Core muscles: shoulders
Secondary muscle: none

Description

Reverse machine flyes focuses on controlled movement and maintaining proper body alignment throughout the exercise. The goal is to create tension where needed while avoiding unnecessary strain or momentum. This helps improve movement quality, joint stability, and overall physical control.

Instructions:

  1. Adjust the handles so that they are fully to the rear. Make an appropriate weight selection and adjust the seat height so the handles are at shoulder level. Grasp the handles with your hands facing inwards. This will be your starting position.
  2. In a semicircular motion, pull your hands out to your side and back, contracting your rear delts.
  3. Keep your arms slightly bent throughout the movement, with all of the motion occurring at the shoulder joint.
  4. Pause at the rear of the movement, and slowly return the weight to the starting position.

Exercise FAQ

How should I program this in a workout?

Use it after your warm-up when you’re fresh. Aim for 2–4 sets and choose a rep range that matches your goal (strength: lower reps; muscle: moderate reps). Think of it as flye movement done with repeatable, clean reps.

What’s a common mistake people make here?

Rushing reps and losing body position. Keep the movement smooth and repeatable so tension stays where you want it.

Does grip or stance matter?

Yes—small changes can shift what you feel and how stable you are. Pick the most controlled position and keep it consistent while you learn the movement.
